Is Joaquin Phoenix for real?

The “Walk the Line” star made his first public performance as a rapper this weekend, awkwardly pacing onstage at Las Vegas club LAVO in front of a cheering crowd before … totally biting it.

Phoenix, 34, walked right off the stage, falling flat on his rear following his unusual three song set. And brother-in-law Casey Affleck was there to capture it all.

Affleck, who is married to Phoenix’s sister Summer, is filming a documentary to capture the actor’s transition to music.

But the ever-present cameras have left many wondering whether Phoenix’s foray into music is a drawn-out joke.

A quick look at the videos below seem to indicate a level of sincerity beyond a gimmick for his new movie “Two Lovers.” Though his decision to make a foray into hip hop may seem, at least to this writer, to be an appropriate analogy–a safe career he loves that he seems to jilt for a rocky path that may seem like greener pastures. Either way, this is a very interesting development. Joaquin has a lot to learn–and he’d better start working on his swagger first.
